The source of micro-organisms in HVAC is Cooling Coils The primary heat exchange components in a modern air handling system are the cooling coils. After passing through the filters, warm air is blown across the surface of the coils. Where it is cooled or “conditioned”. This cooling process draws moisture out of the air, resulting typically in the precipitation of large volumes of water onto the coil surface. The air passing across the coil carries with it a range of contaminants, including dust, micro-organisms and hydrocarbon fumes not removed by the filters. These particulates become entrapped on the wet coil surface. The entrapped micro-organisms have a natural predisposition to form bio films, complex structures that enable extensive bacterial colonies to become entrenched. The damp cooling coils surfaces provide a plentiful supply of both nutrients and water, producing an ideal environment for micro-organisms to proliferate within these bio-films. As the bacteria within the bio-films regenerate, they shed bacterial endotoxins and a range of other potentially toxic organic fragments. These particulates, along with the micro-organisms themselves, are introduced into the occupied space via the HVAC systems.
Specific micro-organisms common within air conditioning cooling coils include:
- Bacillus
- Pseudomonas
- Flavobacterium
- Candida
- Rhodotorula
Exposure to these organisms can lead to various immunological responses and allergic reactions. In cases where one’s immune system has been compromised, exposure to these organisms can lead to pneumonia. This is of particular concern in hospital environments where poor indoor air hospital is known to induce a range of nosocomial infection.
Bioactive Enzyme Coil Cleaner
We are using Bioactive Enzyme Coil cleaner, is a proprietary enzyme based cleaner that targets all domestic, commercial and industrial air handling installations. The product is designed for application to cooling and heating coils “in situ” as part of mechanical plant maintenance. The cleaner strips away any existing bacteria, fungi and other contaminates. The product is non-corrosive and completely biodegradable.
Bioactive Enzyme Coil Treatment
Our Bioactive Coil Treatment product is applied “in situ” to cooling and heating coils after they have been cleaned with Bioactive coil cleaner and existing bio film removed. The treatment leaves a thin coating on the coil surface. The product is formulated to release a small amount of the active biocides over a period of at least 12 months after which time the Bioactive Coil Cleaner is used to remove the existing coating and the treatment is re-applied.
By using Bioactive Enzyme Coil Cleaner and treatment which is Ph neutral, not only is the coil totally cleaned, but also the bio film is eaten away by the bio enzyme, thus improving heat transfer efficiency in the coil, which results in lower energy costs.
